⚠️

Rule of Thumb

If you are arriving without a US credit history, without a job offer already signed, or without a guaranteed lease, assume the higher end of the range.

Quick checklist

  • Have at least 2 months of rent available in liquid cash
  • Add 2-4 weeks of temporary housing
  • Budget for deposits before you sign anything
  • Keep a separate emergency buffer
  • Do not count on reimbursable expenses or delayed paychecks

Recommended target

For most people, $10,000 to $15,000 is the right starting range for the landing phase.

If your target rent is above average, or if you are moving with furniture, pets, or family, increase that number quickly.
