Driving in SF means expensive garage fees and aggressive parking enforcement. Public transit is faster for most trips, but the Bay Area splits service across several independent agencies.

Muni handles buses, streetcars, and light rail within the city. BART is express regional rail cutting under Market Street toward SFO and the East Bay. Caltrain connects to Silicon Valley. SF Bay Ferries link the waterfront to the North Bay and East Bay.

Set Up a Virtual Clipper Card in Wallet

Do not buy a plastic Clipper card at a station kiosk (which charges a $3 card issuance fee). Open Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on your phone, tap "Add Transit Card", select "Clipper", and load funds instantly for $0 card fees. You can tap your phone or Apple Watch directly at turnstiles and bus readers without unlocking your device.

Muni (SF Municipal Railway): Buses & Light Rail

SFMTA operates Muni, which encompasses over 70 bus routes, 6 underground/surface Metro light rail lines (J, K, L, M, N, T), and historic F-Market streetcars.

Fares and Monthly Passes

  • Single Cash / Tag Fare: $2.50 when paying with Clipper ($3.00 cash or MuniMobile app without Clipper discount).
  • Muni Monthly Pass ("M" Pass): $81.00 / month for unlimited rides on Muni buses, light rail, and streetcars (excludes Cable Cars and BART).
  • Muni + BART Monthly Pass ("A" Pass): $98.00 / month for unlimited Muni rides plus unlimited BART rides strictly within San Francisco city limits (between Embarcadero and Balboa Park stations).

120-Minute Muni Free Transfer Window

Every Muni fare tag with Clipper includes unlimited transfers between Muni buses and Metro light rail for 120 minutes from your initial tag. You do not need to tag off Muni vehicles; your initial tag locks in the timestamp. If you transfer to another Muni bus within 2 hours, the Clipper reader displays "Transfer Accepted" and deducts $0.00.

Boarding and Fare Inspection

Muni operates on an "All-Door Boarding" system. You may board via front or rear doors on buses and metro trains. Tap your Clipper card or phone at the card reader near any door upon entering. SFMTA Proof of Payment (POP) officers regularly conduct random fare inspections on trains and popular bus routes. Failure to show a valid tagged Clipper card, active MuniMobile ticket, or paper transfer receipt results in a $125.00 citation.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)

BART is an electric regional rail system operating heavy rail trains underground through SF and across the Bay underwater via the Transbay Tube.

Downtown SF Stations

Within downtown SF, BART shares four underground double-decker stations along Market Street with Muni Metro:

  1. Embarcadero (Financial District & Waterfront connection)
  2. Montgomery St (Financial District central)
  3. Powell St (Union Square & Cable Car turnaround)
  4. Civic Center / UN Plaza (City Hall & Arts District)

BART continues south through the Mission District at 16th St Mission and 24th St Mission, then down to Glen Park, Balboa Park, and SFO Airport.

Distance-Based Fares

BART does not use flat fares. Pricing is calculated strictly by mileage between entry and exit stations:

  • Minimum intra-city fare: $2.30 (e.g., Civic Center to Embarcadero).
  • Downtown SF to Oakland (12th St): $4.75 one-way.
  • Downtown SF to SFO Airport terminal station: $11.55 one-way.
  • Downtown SF to Berkeley: $5.10 one-way.

Must Tag In AND Tag Out on BART

Unlike Muni, BART requires tagging your Clipper card at the turnstile when entering and when exiting. If you fail to tag out, the system charges the maximum possible fare route. Ensure your Clipper balance remains above $2.30 to enter the gate.

Caltrain (Peninsula Commuter Rail)

Caltrain runs down the Peninsula from SF to San Jose.

San Francisco Terminals

  • 4th & King Station (SoMa / China Basin, adjacent to Oracle Park and Muni T-Third line).
  • 22nd Street Station (Dogpatch / Potrero Hill, submerged cut station with stair access).

Zone Pricing & Electrification

Caltrain divides its route into 4 primary zones:

  • 1 Zone Ride (within SF): $3.75 single fare.
  • 3 Zone Ride (SF to Palo Alto / Mountain View): $8.25 single fare.
  • 4 Zone Ride (SF to San Jose Diridon): $10.50 single fare.

Tag On and Tag Off Required for Caltrain Clipper Users

When using Clipper on Caltrain, you MUST tag your card at the platform reader before boarding the train and tag again at the platform reader after exiting at your destination station. If you forget to tag off, Clipper automatically deducts the maximum 4-zone fare ($10.50+).

Virtual Clipper Card Setup

Clipper is the unified electronic fare payment card accepted across all 24 Bay Area transit operators (Muni, BART, Caltrain, SF Bay Ferry, AC Transit, SamTrans, VTA, Golden Gate Transit).

Step-by-Step Mobile Wallet Setup

  1. Apple iOS: Open Wallet app → tap + → select Transit Card → search Clipper → select dollar amount to add ($10.00 minimum initial load).
  2. Android: Open Google Wallet → tap Add to Wallet → select Transit pass → search Clipper → link payment method and load funds.
  3. Enable Express Transit Mode: On iPhone, turn on "Express Transit" for your Clipper card in Wallet settings. This allows you to tap readers at turnstiles without activating FaceID/TouchID, even if your phone battery has depleted reserves.

Special Transit: Cable Cars & SF Bay Ferries

Cable Cars

San Francisco operates the world's last manually operated cable car system across three historic routes:

  • Powell-Hyde: Starts at Powell & Market, passes Lombard Street, terminates at Aquatic Park / Fisherman's Wharf.
  • Powell-Mason: Starts at Powell & Market, cuts through North Beach, terminates at Bay & Taylor.
  • California Street: Runs east-west along California St from Financial District to Van Ness Ave.

Fare: $8.00 single ride for all passengers (children under 5 ride free). Standard Muni single-ride tickets and 120-minute transfers are not valid on Cable Cars. However, the Muni 1-Day Visitor Passport ($13.00) includes unlimited Cable Car rides.

San Francisco Bay Ferries (WETA)

Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) operates high-speed passenger ferries departing from the historic San Francisco Ferry Building (Embarcadero) and Pier 41:

  • SF to Alameda / Oakland: $4.60 Clipper fare (~25 minute crossing).
  • SF to Sausalito / Tiburon: $7.50 – $10.00 Clipper fare (~30 minute crossing).
  • SF to Vallejo: $9.30 Clipper fare (~60 minute crossing).

Ferries offer full indoor/outdoor seating, onboard cafes with draft beer and snacks, free Wi-Fi, and dedicated bike storage racks.
